The European Commission has opened the doors for independent researchers to access funding through its NGI Zero Commons Fund program. Over the course of the next three years, from January 2024 to June 2027, a total of €21.6 million will be distributed in grants, supporting research and the development of open-source software and hardware.
A Flexible Opportunity for Innovators
With a total fund of €19,400,000, the NGI Zero Commons Fund offers flexibility in project duration. Researchers can secure funding for projects ranging from just one month to up to a full year, allowing innovators the freedom to explore ideas without rigid timelines.
Broad Range of Eligible Activities
The fund invites applications for a wide variety of research-related activities. Eligible initiatives include scientific research, the design and development of open software and hardware, and the validation or investigation of technical solutions. Projects that focus on improving software quality and adapting existing systems to new applications, conducting security audits, and creating formal security evidence are also encouraged. Additionally, the fund supports testing, continuous integration, documentation, and the creation of educational materials aimed at both users and developers.
Applicants can also seek support for projects involving inclusive design, user needs analysis, and the standardization of technical solutions. The program will cover costs related to packaging and ensuring the wider use of projects, as well as facilitating participation in technical events like hackathons, IETF, W3C, and FOSDEM. Funding will also be available for project management and essential infrastructure costs, ensuring the smooth operation of innovative endeavors.

Who Can Apply?
The program is open to both individuals and organizations, with no restrictions based on nationality or legal status. However, priority will be given to applicants from European Union (EU) member states and Horizon Europe countries. Researchers from other parts of the world are also welcome to apply, particularly if they offer unique expertise that can contribute to the European dimension of the project.
A notable inclusion in the program is that minors can submit applications without parental consent at the time of submission. However, parental consent will be required upon the final agreement phase.
